Devil

Mr Wong, the owner of Cheung Chaan, was born and raised in Ap Lei Chau. The second generation of his family to run the shop, he started helping out as a little boy and soon learnt different kinds of textile processing and finishing techniques. In the past, the shop’s main business was producing custom-made rain gear, waterproof aprons and marine fabrics for local fishermen. To make sure their garments can withstand the harsh environments at sea, Cheung Chaan uses imported metal snap fasteners on their products rather than regular buttons. The background of the shutter artwork is inspired by the red, white and blue plastic canvas that is ubiquitous in Hong Kong and can be used to make all kinds of hardwearing products. The image also shows an array of tools and products from Mr Wong’s shop – including a reel of thread, a sewing machine, a hole puncher, a traditional ruler, a waterproof apron, a rain jacket and a pair of scissors.
