Uncle
Cheung Choon Chemist
Artist: Uncle
Cheung Choon Chemist was established in Kowloon City in the 1950s by Chinese medicine practitioner Dr Fong Chan Ko. Dr Fong can trace his family’s medical practice background back to his Chiu Chow ancestors in China in the early 19th century. During the 1950s, a lot of medical practitioners set up shop in Kowloon Walled City. Many of them were unlicensed businesses drawn to the neighbourhood because of the hands-off approach the authorities took to enforcing laws around the area. By the 1960s, Cheung Choon Chemist had begun to sell Chinese and Western medicine. Some of the shop’s customers were from the unlicensed medical businesses close by. Others were travellers who would drop in to buy medicines before heading to Kai Tak Airport. The shutter artwork explores the relationship between Cheung Choon Chemist and the surrounding neighbourhood, showing Dr Fong’s hands taking a patient’s pulse, and an aeroplane flying low over old tenement buildings – an iconic sight before the closure of Kai Tak Airport.
