Shun Hing Restaurant
Artist: Wong Ting Fung

Shun Hing Restaurant is a “cha chaan teng” (Hong Kong-style cafe) serving the city’s favourite comfort food, like pineapple buns, egg tarts, Hong Kong-style milk tea and coffee. The restaurant was established in 1984, by the father of Mr Ma, the current owner. Since taking over in 2000, Mr Ma has done major renovations to rejuvenate the 1980s retro-style interior. He has also preserved the restaurant’s original bakery, where fresh bread is still baked every day. Shung Hing Restaurant remains a local favourite, with regular customers dropping in for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Artist Wong Ting Fung’s shutter artwork shows a bird’s eye perspective image of Mr Ma and his father enjoying afternoon tea at the restaurant. The image captures an intimate father-son portrait and reflects Shun Hing Restaurant’s thirty-year legacy. The right side of the image represents the past – with Mr Ma’s father and the shadow of the plane over old Kowloon City. The left side represents the present – with Mr Ma and the skyscrapers of Kowloon City today.
