So Kee Ho
Artist: Wong Ting Fung

So Kee Ho boat supplies shop is owned by Mr Teng, an Ap Lei Chau local who has witnessed the development of the district from a small fishing community to a dense urban neighbourhood. When he started his business in the 1960s, Mr Teng worked from an unassuming wooden hut, repairing boats and selling basic supplies like rope, bamboo poles and rattan baskets. In the 1970s, he moved his shop to its current location and expanded the inventory to include more heavy-duty equipment and accessories, such as chains and anchors. The shutter artwork reflects the urbanisation of Ap Lei Chau, and uses the fishing boat as a symbol for the island, with the right side representing the past, and the left side representing the present. When setting out to sea, to ensure good feng shui and a safe return for the people on board, a boat should face towards the water not towards the land. Can you guess where the sea is by looking at the artwork?
