Wing Kee
Artist: Wai Wai
Wing Kee was established in 1964 to provide tools and boat accessories for the fishing communities in Ap Lei Chau. As well as selling hardware, the shop also offers sheet metal engineering services. Although there are no readymade products on display, Wing Kee’s owner Mr Kwok can customise almost anything, including engine parts, water filters, valves, and pipes for exhaust fans. The shutter artwork shows Mr Kwok in the process of crafting a sheet metal pan. First, incisions are made at each corner of the sheet metal so that the sides can be folded up. After the edges are filed smooth, the pan is carefully shaped with a mallet. Like origami and paper-folding crafts, the process requires no glue or staples – but it does require a meticulous eye, good hand skills and lots of patience.
