Artist: Chloe Yau

Wong Ming Kee is a family-run noodle and congee shop famous for its “three treasures” – cuttlefish balls, pork balls and sliced cuttlefish. Founded in the 1950s by Mr Wong, a Chiu Chow native from Puning in Guangdong, the business was initially a simpledai pai dong” (open-air food stall). Later, Mr Wong moved his stall and set up a shop at the current location in Kai Tak Road. When Kai Tak Airport was still in operation, Wong Ming Kee was popular with flight attendants and airport staff as well as local residents. The shutter artwork portrays Mr Wong making one of his “treasures” – cuttlefish balls – against a backdrop of Kowloon City, reflecting how the shop has continued to exist despite the changes in the area over the years. The shop is currently managed by Mr Wong’s son and daughter, who preserve their father’s legacy by continuing to serve food that is made fresh every day at a family-owned factory.
